TC YASA - UNRC Visits affected areas in the immediate wake of a disaster

The UN in the Pacific continues to work alongside, the Fijian Government, supporting Fijians through the aftermath of Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

The UN Resident Coordinator, together with the 26 UN agencies operating in the Pacific and the technical expertise they bring, are fully committed to the recovery efforts that will follow in the next few months, and remain committed to the vision of building back better.

The Resident Coordinator, Mr. Sanaka Samarasinha has spent the last week visiting some of the most affected areas in the North of Fiji. He has seen the effects on livelihoods, schools, homes, and lives that TC Yasa has left in its wake. Mr. Samarasinha has been on the ground, with the Fijian government, to ascertain the areas of support that are required, to then determine how best the UN can continue to support.

Some of the relief activity that is already underway includes, but is not limited to:

The distribution of tarpaulins, ‘school-in-a-box’ kits, Early Childhood Development kits and recreation kits for schools in Savusavu, Qamea and Yanuca.

Supporting the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to ensure that people continue to receive the care they need even as some local health centres and nursing stations damaged in the cyclone, need time to get back to being fully operational.

Working alongside the Republic of Fiji Military Forces supporting the Fiji Government's efforts to restore and strengthen telecommunications systems and connectivity in communities in the Northern district severely affected by TC Yasa.

The UN is committed to ensuring that as we continue to support the incredibly resilient people here in Fiji, we are not leaving anyone behind. We will continue to ensure that those most affected receive the support they need.
