It is a true honor and privilege to address you today at the launch of the Digital Economy Report: Pacific Edition 2024, Promoting Digital Entrepreneurship and Trade.
This report signifies a key step forward in our shared journey toward digital transformation in the Pacific region.
The UN’s Commitment to Digital Transformation
The United Nations remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering inclusive digital development as a core driver of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the Pacific, digital inclusion is more than a tool; it is a transformative force, essential for economic empowerment, resilience, and regional integration, especially for Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
By championing digital transformation, we aim to bridge the digital divide, enhance connectivity, and empower communities to thrive in an increasingly digital world. This effort is integral to better serving our Member States and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Spotlight on the Pacific Digital Economy Programme (PDEP)
I am delighted to spotlight the transformative work of the Pacific Digital Economy Programme (PDEP). This joint initiative, led by UNCTAD, UNCDF, and UNDP, brings together the strengths of these agencies to support the development of inclusive digital economies across the Pacific.
PDEP serves as a powerful catalyst for change, enabling the implementation of national and regional e-commerce strategies that enhance connectivity and empower Pacific communities. This partnership exemplifies the strength of the UN system working together as One UN in the Pacific.
Acknowledging Regional and National Ownership
We applaud the leadership of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and Pacific governments in shaping the digital economy landscape in the region. The growing adoption of national e-commerce strategies, aligned with the Pacific Regional E-commerce Strategy and Roadmap (PRESR), is a testament to the commitment of governments across the region.
It is crucial to emphasize that the future success of digital initiatives depends on national ownership and regional cooperation. This approach ensures that strategies and initiatives are sustainable and responsive to the unique needs of the Pacific.
Report Highlights and Celebrating Milestones and Partnerships
The report we are launching today builds on the insights of the first edition in 2022. The initial report identified the early-stage nature of digital development in the Pacific, highlighting opportunities to use digital technology for sustainable development, bridge divides, and better integrate into the global economy.
This year’s edition offers a deeper analysis, drawing connections between foundational digital infrastructure, the challenges faced by digital entrepreneurs, and the barriers hindering digital trade. With updated insights, practical recommendations, and qualitative findings from across Pacific SIDS, this report serves as a valuable tool for advancing digital transformation in the region.
Today, as we celebrate the release of this second edition, I want to extend our deepest thanks to our partners—the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand—for their unwavering support of the Pacific Digital Economy Programme (PDEP), and especially to the EU for their contributions to this report. Regional partnerships and innovation will continue to be the cornerstone of our collective success in advancing digital initiatives.
Encouraging Action and Collaboration
Looking ahead, sustained investment, enhanced coordination, and policy reform will be crucial for accelerating the digital transformation of the Pacific. As we strive to meet the 2030 Agenda and 2050 Regional Vision, I urge governments, communities, civil society, development partners, and the private sector to come together and build a resilient, inclusive digital future for the Pacific.
