International Day for Countering Hate Speech, 18 June

18 June 2023

June 18 is the International Day for Countering Hate Speech
Caption: June 18 is the International Day for Countering Hate Speech. Hate speech is: “any kind of communication in speech, writing or behavior, that attacks or uses pejorative or discriminatory language with reference to a person or a group on the basis of who they are.

In the Pacific countries/region, prevention is key in our collective effort to say #NoToHate. As we mark the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, let's prioritize proactive measures to create a more inclusive and harmonious society.

To prevent hate, we can start by challenging it through the power of positive messages. Let's actively share messages of tolerance, understanding, and respect, especially when it comes to respecting the rights of minority groups, including the LGBT communities.

Supporting those who are targeted by hate speech is essential in our prevention efforts. Together, let's stand in solidarity and extend our support to all individuals. By offering solidarity and protection, we can create a strong network that combats hate and ensures that everyone feels valued and included

Preventing hate speech also involves taking action on social platforms. We must actively report instances of hate speech and intolerance. By holding perpetrators accountable, we contribute to building a safer online community where hate finds no fertile ground.

As we observe the International Day for Countering Hate Speech, let's reinforce our commitment to prevention. By working together and taking proactive steps, we can cultivate a Pacific community that thrives on acceptance, understanding, and unity. Let's stand united and declare, loud and clear, that hate has no place in our region.
